The frame looks to me to predate the forks, i had thought the open frames were girder only. On the stamping on the crankcase, i have been told that the wartime workshops use that sort of code letter plus 3 numbers when dismantling engines so that they could ensure matching components went back together. My WD16H has this but the stampings are inside the cases and timing cover. The grinding to remove the engine number is rather agricultural and has taken the bore x stroke stamp as well.
You would think that if someone was planning to deceive they would be more subtle than that. All in all with an open frame and ohv engine it looks like late prewar model 18 or model 50?

I disagree with him. I see this being much more than just a cock-up. I can’t see how BSA got an Export award for and at the very same time we have all this drama going on. I am having to doubt much of the existing written material on the events of the period. These guys knew in , well at least the ones mentioned in Ryerson’s book. His book was written just years afterwards though and the defensive story was well formulated by then.
We have suspicions of why this happened but the guys involved had much to lose. Bert Hopwood knew, as did others that had less to lose than those directly involved and yet they all chose to keep mum.

Triumph’s Dating Codes The following comes from my many years of research into the old Triumph Works at Coventry, not from any documentation, for none survived from the air raid attack on the night of November 14th From the time when Triumph started producing machines with their own engines for the engine would be date stamped with the date of machine assembly. Engines, frames, and later, gearboxes were made in different parts of the Works.
The frames and gearboxes were stamped with a sequential number which identified their type, while engines were assembled but un-numbered. From their different shops workshops the engines, frames and gearboxes, along with other items, were transferred to a central stores from where they would be collected as ‘kits of parts’ for putting together in the Assembly Shop. As the storeman would not issue items in direct numerical sequence, and subsequently move the following items along the shelf, there was no direct correlation between numbers at any particular time.

The original factory records contain a lot of information about the bike including all the basic details such as frame, engine and gearboxes numbers, the exact model of the bike and when it was manufactured. The factory records also contain lots of additional information which may be of interest to the current owner. These are detailed in a separate letter which the Club supplies alongside the dating certificate.

Online frame dating service The majority of the original factory records are still in paper form, but increasingly the club is working to get these into an electronic database to make searching much easier. There is now an online frame dating service available which allows you to search the database for the fare number of your AJS or Matchless motorcycle.
