First trimester ultrasounds

Well, one of the major things that I think we were wanting to get out of the scan was to discover that there was only one baby, because my husband is a twin and as far as I was aware, there was no history of twins in my family. But it actually turns out that my father’s parents on both sides there had been a history of identical twins, but they had died so we didn’t know about it, because they’d died as babies. I actually was kind of thinking, ‘Oh, well, if it was twins then what you don’t know won’t hurt you’. And, you know, I’ve never had a baby before so if I had two then I wouldn’t know any different to just having one. My husband, on the other hand, was quite relieved to see there was only one, because he was of the opinion that one would have to be sold because we wouldn’t be able to afford two! So he was quite pleased. Did you know about your family history then, before you went for the scan or did it only come up afterwards when somebody said, ‘Oh, yeah, we’ve got twins too’? It came up when I found out I was pregnant. Because my husband’s a non-identical twin, so we didn’t think there was much risk of any sort of genetic thing, but the fact that there was identical twins was kind of a bit of a, ‘Oh, right, okay, you might have told me that beforehand. I suppose it was very emotional, actually.

Your doctor calculates your stage of pregnancy or your gestational age using your last menstrual period. This is also how your doctor will estimate your due date by counting 40 weeks from the first day of your last period.

An ultrasound scan estimates your baby’s age by measuring different parts of your baby’s body such as her head, abdomen, and legs. In the second and third trimester, a difference in age of up to two weeks is considered normal between your gestational age and the ultrasound scan age. After all, your gestational age doesn’t start from the actual day of conception but from your last menstrual cycle. For example, your anomaly scan may date your baby at around 19 weeks when your doctor considers you already 20 weeks pregnant.

If this happens, your doctor will not be alarmed but she’ll keep an eye on how your baby is developing in subsequent scans just to be sure that the difference in age doesn’t increase. You may also find that your scan report indicates different ages for different body parts of your baby. Your baby’s legs might correspond to 21 weeks of pregnancy while her head might indicate 20 weeks.
